Hype Redefines Itself In New York

Big long entry over at Chris' blog today. Go read that, get excited, and come back here.

Back? Good.

Wait, I bet you didn't go read it. You're trying to pull one over on me. I know your tricks! Go read it. Then come back. For reals.

Ok, that's better.

Anyway, tomorrow morning (and by morning I mean that in the most destructive way possible: before 6am) I'm flying to NYC because I've been invited to attend Sony's PlayStation 3 launch party. That's tomorrow night, I fly back Friday morning. I'm flying to New York, going to a party, then coming home. What does that make me? I'm afraid to consider.

Sony's parties are usually pretty interesting, but this is a semi-open access event so I don't really know what to expect. I'm used to the sort of party where you have to be related to Jack Sony to get in, but at this one they're letting in the first 400 "normal" people who line up. That doesn't apply to me and my spectacular media credentials, but it will be interesting to see a line 400 people deep. I've been to Cedar Point and Disney World, but I don't think I've seen more than 100 people lining up for anything that doesn't involve lap restraints.

The idea of the party is that at midnight they'll start selling PlayStation 3s. I suppose waiting in a 400-person line for a few hours would be better than waiting outside a Meijer's for 3 days like people are doing.

I wouldn't wait in a 1/2 hour line for a PS3, considering how much they cost and how few games there are at this moment. If I can get one without a hassle, I might go for it, but I have to tell you people: it isn't worth it. Console launch hype is all BS, stores wont have enough because everybody knows that if they don't make enough consoles, people will want them more. If Sony made 10 million PS3s and had hundreds on every store shelf, they'd lose all the hype associated with being impossible to get. I loathe and deplore this system, as it just screws the loyal consumers to attract those on the fence, but then everything Sony does these days seems to be design to screw someone.

So screw them, I'm going to their party and eating all their food.

Some big deal rap guy is going to be DJing the party, like Ludacris or some other misspelled word. Couldn't care less, and Charley Murphy is going to be there doing standup or something similar to leech the most dollars from his Chapelle Show stint. Whatever, just bring on the food. Potstickers please.

I'll be covering the event for Gaming Horizon, of course, though it would be cool if GH would launch a sister-site. Some kind of gaming blog, but it would have to have some new technology edge over other gaming blogs, and it would have to launch in the next 2 weeks. I could even code it and be the lead editor of it. That would never happen, though. Never ever.

Now that you're done living a lie, go read Chris' blog like you said you did before.
